Your Baja Sur Cancer Care Support in Action

February was a month of meaningful progress for Baja Cancer Outreach and the communities we serve across Baja California Sur. As a result of your generosity, we will continue to expand cancer education, patient support, and community partnerships that reduce barriers to care.

Expanding Cancer Awareness in Baja Mexico; connecting patients with educational resources in places where they meet.

This month, we introduced a new breast cancer awareness initiative designed to reach people in practical, everyday settings, in other words, bringing health education to people where they access other healthcare services. Baja Cancer Outreach created a durable vinyl poster with easy-to-understand prevention information placed at Baja Mobile SteriVet’s pet sterilization clinics. While families wait for their pets, they now have access to potentially life-saving cancer education in addition to learning about pet post op care.

We estimate that more than a thousand pet parents across Baja California Sur will see these posters each year. In addition, the posters will be displayed in the hospital waiting room in Loreto, and we are working to place them in government clinics throughout the region to expand patient education and access even further, therefore improving health for everyone.

Comfort and Support for Patients in Treatment

Your support helped us distribute 20 Cancer Comfort Care Kits to men, women, and teens currently undergoing cancer treatment. Each kit included personal comfort items and $1,000 pesos to help cover food expenses during medical travel.

Our partners at Onco Loreto continue to provide additional travel assistance in Baja for transportation and lodging, helping patients and families manage the financial strain of traveling for care.

Several of our board members personally joined the distribution efforts. Being present with patients and families was deeply meaningful and reaffirmed the importance of compassionate, community-based support.

Building Stronger Community Partnerships

Collaboration remains central to expanding cancer support services. In February, we met with Rotary leaders and Loreto’s mayor, Paz Ochoa, to explore partnerships between city government, Baja Cancer Outreach, Onco Loreto, and other service organizations. Working together allows us to extend resources, coordinate care, and strengthen local support networks.

A Milestone Fundraising Event: Supporting cancer travel in Baja Sur

February concluded with an inspiring milestone: our first major fundraising dinner held at Gastroteca Azul on February 23rd.

The evening brought together a generous community of supporters and raised more than $32,000 to assist Loreto, Baja Sur cancer patients through Baja Cancer Outreach in partnership with Onco Loreto’s travel and treatment support programs.

We plan to distribute most of these funds within the next 12 months and are committed to sustaining support for future years through additional fundraising in 2026–2027.

 

Supporting Nutrition and Prevention

Good nutrition plays a vital role in cancer prevention, during treatment and while recovering. Baja Cancer Outreach is sponsoring:

• A Spanish-language community nutrition lecture open to all Loreto residents
• Individual nutrition assessments and counseling for current cancer patients provided by a registered dietitian

These programs help patients strengthen their bodies during treatment while improving long-term health outcomes.

We continue seeking and supporting new programs across Baja that align with our mission to advance:

• Cancer awareness
• Prevention and early detection
• Education
• Patient support services

Every initiative is guided by one goal: reducing suffering from cancer by removing barriers to care.
