Baja Cancer Outreach’s Strategic Plan for 2026–2029
Our Strategic Plan 2026–2029 outlines how Baja Cancer Outreach will expand cancer awareness, strengthen patient support, increase fundraising capacity, and build a sustainable organization to better serve the people of Loreto. We invite our community, donors, volunteers, and partners to learn more about our vision for the future.
Building a Future with Greater Access to Cancer Prevention, Care, and Hope
Cancer affects every community, including our small town of Loreto. While significant barriers remain for people seeking cancer screening, treatment, and support, we believe that meaningful progress happens when communities work together.
To guide our efforts over the next several years, Baja Cancer Outreach has adopted a Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2026–2029. This roadmap reflects our commitment to improving access to cancer prevention, education, and care while building a stronger, more sustainable organization.
Our Vision
Equitable access to cancer care and prevention.
Our Mission
Baja Cancer Outreach supports the people of Loreto facing cancer by strengthening awareness, education, and care through partnerships.
Strategic Imperative #1: Increase Awareness of Cancer Prevention and Early Detection
Early detection saves lives. Unfortunately, many cancers in Loreto and all of Baja California Sur are diagnosed at advanced stages, when treatment options are more limited and outcomes are poorer. Access to cancer care will improve as patients feel empowered to seek out and ask for better access to cancer care.
Over the next several years, we will expand our cancer awareness efforts by:
- Building on successful hospital and Steri-Vet educational posters
- Expanding educational materials into additional gathering places, spas and medical facilities
- Distributing culturally appropriate posters and pamphlets
- Developing a “Bring a Friend” program that encourages cancer screening and testing for women and men
- Hosting educational health talks in English and Spanish featuring medical experts
By increasing awareness and encouraging preventive screening, we hope to help more people detect cancer earlier, when treatment is most effective.
Strategic Imperative #2: Enhance Local Patient Services
Cancer patients in Loreto and all of Baja California Sur often face significant challenges accessing specialized care, including travel, financial hardship, and limited local resources.
Working alongside our partners, we will explore opportunities to expand support services, including:
- Mammography mobile screening services
- Nutrition support and education
- HPV screening initiatives and education
- A patient navigator program to help individuals and families navigate the cancer journey
- A Peer-to-Peer support program connecting cancer survivors with newly diagnosed patients
We will also continue and expand our Comfort Care Kit program, providing practical support and comfort items to individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
Strategic Imperative #3: Raise Funds to Support Cancer Care and Awareness
None of this work is possible without generous supporters.
Our fundraising goals are designed to provide reliable, sustainable support for local cancer programs while increasing our impact year after year.
Key initiatives include:
- A Summer 2026 email campaign June 20-29, 2026 with a goal of raising $12,000 USD
- Annual Comfort Care Kit program, events continuing in January 2027
- Continued annual support for Onco Loreto’s cancer assistance programs
- A signature fundraising event in 2028
- A larger signature event in 2030
These efforts will help fund patient assistance, education programs, and future program expansion.
Strategic Imperative #4: Develop Organizational Systems, Resilience, and Sustainability
Strong programs require a strong organization behind them.
Over the next several years, Baja Cancer Outreach will focus on building the infrastructure needed to serve the community for decades to come.
Our priorities include:
- Growing and diversifying our Board of Directors to nine members
- Recruiting volunteers with needed expertise and skills
- Increasing representation from Mexican nationals
- Expanding bilingual outreach and social media engagement
- Improving our digital presence through search engine optimization (SEO) and online communications
- Building relationships with additional healthcare providers and community partners
- Establishing and maintaining organizational reserves
- Developing a long-range succession plan to ensure leadership continuity
These investments will strengthen our ability to respond to community needs while maintaining transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
A Community Effort
The challenges facing cancer patients in rural Baja California Sur are too large for any one organization to solve alone. Progress depends on partnerships, volunteers, donors, healthcare providers, and community members working together.
This strategic plan represents more than a list of goals. It is a commitment to creating a future where fewer people suffer because of delayed diagnosis, limited access to care, or lack of support.
We are grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point and invite you to join us as we work toward a future where every person in Loreto has better access to cancer care and a better chance at prevention, early detection, treatment, and hope.
Together, we can make a difference.
