TÓMATE 5. REVISA 5. COMPARTE 5.
Tómate 5: A Simple Way to Know Your Breasts and Share the Message
This October, Baja Cancer Outreach is introducing Tómate 5, a simple breast awareness campaign created for women in Loreto and surrounding communities in Baja California Sur.
The idea was inspired by the National Cancer Council Malaysia’s Think 5! campaign, a member of UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) and adapted for our community:
TÓMATE 5. REVISA 5. COMPARTE 5.
Why five?
Tómate 5 minutos. Take 5 minutes for breast awareness.
Take five minutes to become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel.
Revisa 5 cosas. Check for 5 breast changes.
Know five changes to look or feel for: a new lump or thickening, a nipple change, changes in the skin, a lump or swelling in the armpit, or unexpected nipple discharge.
Comparte con 5 personas. Tell 5 friends to check.
Tell five women you care about to do the same.
Why does this matter in Loreto?
For women living in rural Baja California Sur, access to screening mammography is not always readily available. At the same time, we continue to see women diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Through partnerships with Onco Loreto and Mulege Community Alliance, Baja Cancer Outreach, is making travel funds available for women to travel for mammograms and follow up care for breast cancer.
You can donate essential travel funds for women facing cancer HERE.
Tómate 5 is not a substitute for mammography or medical care. It is a practical way to encourage breast awareness—knowing what is normal for you and paying attention when something changes.
The mobile mammogram unit is expected to return to Loreto in October and when screening is available, we want women to encourage one another to use it. Take a friend to get a mammogram. Remind someone you love to make an appointment. Share what you learn.
Taking breast awareness into the community in español.
This October, BCO will be putting Tómate 5 posters where women live, work, gather, and connect—including salons, schools, the community college, healthcare settings, and breast cancer awareness events throughout the community.
We hope Tómate 5 becomes more than an October campaign. We hope it becomes a simple reminder that women can share with one another throughout the year:
Tómate 5. Revisa 5. Comparte 5.
Because awareness can start with five minutes—and one woman can help create a ripple of awareness throughout our community.
