Hope in Action with Onco Loreto

A Glimmer of Hope: Maria Elena on Welcoming a New Cancer Patient

For someone newly diagnosed with cancer, the first days can be filled with fear, uncertainty and questions.

What happens next? Where will treatment take place? How will I pay for it? How will I get there?

For people living in Loreto, those questions can be especially daunting. Many cancer patients must travel outside the community for biopsies, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other aspects of their care.

For Maria Elena Posadas, founder of Onco Loreto, this is where her work begins.

We recently asked Maria Elena what she feels when she helps a new cancer patient.

“I feel a great sense of hope, knowing there is a chance for survival.”

Maria Elena understands the fear that comes with a cancer diagnosis from her own experience as a breast cancer survivor. That experience led her to create Onco Loreto and dedicate herself to helping people in her community facing cancer.

Today, Onco Loreto supports women, men and children as they navigate the many challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.

A glimmer of hope

One of the most important moments in Maria Elena’s work is when a patient arrives at Onco Loreto for the first time.

She describes that moment this way:

“For me, the most important work happens when a patient arrives for the first time—filled with fear and uncertainty, and desperate because they lack the financial means to treat their illness.”

This is where the partnership between Onco Loreto and Baja Cancer Outreach becomes meaningful.

BCO helps provide financial support that can help patients continue their treatment when the costs of traveling for cancer care create an additional burden. But for Maria Elena, the impact of that support goes beyond the dollars themselves.

“When I tell them about BCO, I see a glimmer of hope in their eyes, and that means so much to me.”

That glimmer of hope is at the heart of why BCO supports Onco Loreto.

We are not a medical provider, and we do not provide direct patient care. Instead, BCO works with local partners to strengthen access to cancer care for people in Loreto.

Our partnership with Onco Loreto helps make it possible for Maria Elena and her team to be there for patients when they need support most.

When funding means treatment can continue

Cancer treatment can be a long and difficult journey. For someone who already faces the challenge of traveling outside Loreto for care, the financial burden can become another obstacle.

Maria Elena has seen how additional funding has expanded what Onco Loreto can provide.

“Definitely; the donations we’ve received have enabled us to provide greater benefits—things that are so necessary from the very moment cancer is detected.”

That support can help address needs that arise from the very beginning of a patient’s cancer journey and help patients stay connected to the care they need. You can help today.

For BCO, this is an important part of partnership: supporting an organization that understands the local community, knows its patients and can respond to their needs.

Why Maria Elena keeps showing up

We also asked Maria Elena what motivates her to come to work every day.

Her answer speaks to the human side of cancer care.

“My main reason for going to the office every day is the possibility that a new patient might arrive—someone in a state of extreme emotional fragility.”

Maria Elena brings something to that first encounter that cannot be measured in dollars.

“Being able to welcome them warmly and share my own story helps build trust and empathy.”

Her own experience with cancer allows her to meet patients not only as someone who has created an organization to help them, but as someone who understands what it means to face a frightening diagnosis.

And there are moments of joy, too.

Maria Elena is motivated by welcoming patients who return after completing treatment:

“who arrive happy knowing they have finished their treatment—a long, painful journey—and who now truly understand the value of life.”

Hope is part of the journey

Cancer care is about much more than what happens in a hospital or treatment center.

For a patient in Loreto, the journey may involve difficult travel, financial uncertainty, fear and long periods of treatment. Having someone who welcomes you, listens to you and helps you find a way forward can make an enormous difference.

Maria Elena is there at the beginning of that journey—and she is there to celebrate or honor them when it ends.

BCO is delighted to collaborate with Onco Loreto as a local partner.  Our role is to help strengthen the resources available to people facing cancer in Loreto, while Onco Loreto brings the local knowledge, relationships and compassionate support that patients need.

Sometimes partnership looks like financial support that helps make treatment possible.

Sometimes it looks like a trusted person opening the door when someone is frightened and uncertain.

And sometimes, it looks like a patient seeing a glimmer of hope.

That is why this work matters.
